Well, perhaps "wasn't strong enough" was a bad term. I didn't mean to imply that they were completely hopeless, far from it! All I meant was... all conflict, at its roots, is a battle of hopes. The stronger hope will win, and the weaker hope will lose. All of their hopes weren't weak... they just happened to be weaker in that particular match, you see?
And unfortunately, that match costed them their life.
